My latest thing is e-book readers. Amazon.com - a very specific use of the dot com there, had a product called a kindle. it seems to be very cool and while vacationing, it would cut down on the weight and size of my luggage big time seeing as i travel with at least 6 books anywhere just to make sure i don't run out. but, i wonder if i need one and i see some very obvious pros and cons to these machines. also living in canada is a problem for some machined like the kindle but sony seems to have a very good e-reader and it well reputed. as a starting machine, it might be just the thing.
pros
-less books to schlepp around
-saves trees
-cuts down on necessary/essential storage
space for my books at home
-very cool!
-books are downloaded and stored
-save money on books and shipping
-can be read in daylight or darkness
-can read/show all docs and pdf's
-cool technology
-can show pictures
-can 'read' to me or my students if i need my eyes for something else
-i think the world is heading this way eventually, why not get in at the start?
cons
*electronic and therefor reliant on batteries/electricity
*can it be dropped in the 'tub?
*not the same as a book in my hand
*seems like a luxury
*expensive at the outset
*new titles aren't always available on the same date as the paper versions
*effect on my eyes?
ok, so these are my thoughts so far, but it's an interesting idea!
